Flader identifies an inherent tension in the pursuit of what Leopold came to call "land health" between the application of science, and scientific findings, on the one hand, and the inherently complexity -- not fully understandable or humanly manageable -- of natural systems, on the other. To know Leopold only through "A Sand County Almanac" is to miss what Flader terms his "intellectual odyssey" from classic "game conservation" in the early 20th century to his groundbreaking articulation, at the end of his life, of a broader ecologically-based land ethic. Exciting recolletions of work and travel fill this volume, which is entrancing form cover to cover. It is not an easy read by any means.
